I met with Pauline Williams a distinguished client side researcher last week and talked to her about waggledancing. I was struck that although still conceive of waggledancers as strategists that it appears to work just as well for those who have 'insight' in their job title. Which worries me a little because it suggests that Waggledancing is a generic description of what good interpersonal communication is at work - which would take away a lot of its power. To me the point of waggledancing is to find stuff and point others to it not just to make people feel good. So it applies to those jobs where you can't order people to do things but have to influence them because it is in their and the organisations best interest that they co-operate with you.  Insight is a different role and most companies can't afford it. I believe that in agencies planners play both a strategy and an insight role. I suspect in most organisations these functions are split. Answers on a postcard anybody?
